CHAPTER EIGHT

Two whole days later, my chewed-up garden still looked chewed-up. It made me sad. It also took away my motivation for other things.

Mo-ti-va-tion means when you feel something so strong that it makes you move. And you do it.

My garden was not growing and I was not moving. I read my business plan and felt even worse. If nothing grows there wouldn’t be anything to eat. And there would be nothing to sell. I had worked so hard for nothing!

I made a different kind of list in Sakhi. Then I took Sakhi downstairs.

“Mom, you have a lot of patience,” I told her.

Mom poured two glasses of milk for us. “Well, thank you.”

I sighed.

Mom put the glasses on the table and sat down next to me. “What’s the matter, Nina? What’s bothering you?”

“The garden,” I replied.

“Why?”

I showed her the list I had made.

Mom read. I reread what I had written over her shoulder.

Garden challenge list

A garden needs many things: soil, sun, water, seeds, etc.

Even after you get all that, you’re not done.

What a master of the garden needs is some luck.

But it is difficult to find luck.

They don’t sell it in a store or even online.

Even if someone has a lot of luck (like Kavita and Jay because the rabbit didn’t eat their plants), they can’t give it to you.

I don’t know much about luck.

It’s because I hardly ever have any.
